OCTOBER

Hi guys! Today I willl explain about National Day in Indonesia and we called as an historical event too. Yes that's Sumpah Pemuda. So, let's get start it!

Explanation About Sumpah Pemuda
October 28 is celebrated as Youth Pledge Day (Sumpah Pemuda) in Indonesia every year. It is a special day and has a deep meaning for the Indonesian people.

On that day, the Indonesian nation remembers the history of unity and integrity which was summarized in the Youth Pledge. The pledge was made on October 28, 1928, Indonesian youths vowed to have one homeland, one nation, and one language: Indonesia.

Looking at the history of the Youth Pledge, we need to remember the Second Youth Congress, on October 28, 1928. The congress lasted for two days, namely on 27 and 28 October 1928 in Jakarta, which at that time was still called Batavia.

On this historic day, the participants of the Second Youth Congress agreed to formulate three promises which were later referred to as the Youth Pledge. The contents of the Youth Pledge are as follows:

Kami putra dan putri Indonesia, mengaku bertumpah darah yang satu, tanah air Indonesia.

Kami putra dan putri Indonesia, mengaku berbangsa yang satu, bangsa Indonesia.

Kami putra dan putri Indonesia, menjunjung bahasa persatuan, bahasa Indonesia.

The Youth Pledge gives an awareness that the differences of the Indonesian people can be united as Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, which means “different but still one”. In addition, the Youth Pledge also contains many positive values that can be applied in everyday life, such as patriotism, mutual cooperation, deliberation for consensus, love for the country, kinship, unity, oneness and harmony.

The Youth Pledge should be used as an inspiration for the young generation of Indonesia today, to take Indonesia to a better direction. (from various sources)

Cars should be banned in the city

Cars should be banned in the city. As we all know, cars create pollution, and cause a lot of road deaths and other accidents.

Firstly, cars, as we all know, contribute to most of the pollution in the world. Cars emit a deadly gas that causes illnesses such as bronchitis, lung cancer, and ‘triggers’ of asthma. Some of these illnesses are so bad that people can die from them.

Secondly, the city is very busy. Pedestrians wander everywhere and cars commonly hit pedestrians in the city, which causes them to die. Cars today are our roads biggest killers.

Thirdly, cars are very noisy. If you live in the city, you may find it hard to sleep at night, or concentrate on your homework, and especially talk to someone.

In conclusion, cars should be banned from the city for the reasons listed.

Questions about Exposition Text
Analytical Text 1
There is no best way to deal with pests in agriculturE. Pesticides which are commonly used may cause many problems. I think combining different management operations is the most effective way to control pests.
Firstly, the chemicals in the pesticides may build up as residues in the environment and in the soil which absorbs the chemicals. This reduces the quality of farm product.
Secondly, pests can gradually become resistant to pesticides. This means that newer and stronger ones have to be developed.
Lastly, some pesticides affect non target plants and animals such as fish and bees. This affects the ecology and environment as well.
So, understanding of ecology of an area helps a lot in pest control. Pesticides should be chosen and applied carefully so that they don’t affect the ecological balance and environment.
Therefore, integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option to fight pest in agriculture and livestock.

1. One of the disadvantages of using chemical pesticides is …
A. killing fish and bees.
B. increasing crops productivity.
C. creating balanced ecosystem.
D. causing the pests to become inactive

Analytical Text 2
I strongly believe that mobile phones are necessary. My reasons for this belief are that these phones are convenient for business people who travel a lot, and they are handy for emergencies.
To begin with, mobile phones are necessary in the case of emergencies. For instance, if you fall down a set of stairs in a building and are badly injured and can’t reach a pay phone, it is handy to have one to use. Or, if your car breaks down in the middle of the night in a strange neighbourhood, it would be dangerous to leave it in search of a public phone booth.
My other main reason is that mobile phones are convenient for business people. For example, if you are out of the state or even overseas and you have to contact a client to do some important work, it is useful to have one to use. By using a mobile phone, important information can be received. People can’t stay in an office all day waiting for their phone to ring. Some people have to go and do jobs or they will go out of business. You can even send faxes or messages and use the internet with your mobile.
In conclusion, I believe that mobile phones have now become a necessary part of every day life. Instant communication will ensure that information can be passed on with a simple press of a button. Whether this is to do with business or personal information or emergencies, it goes to show that they are necessary in the new millennium.

3. How many reasons are used to support the writer’s opinion?
A. One reason
B. Two reasons
C. Three reasons
D. Four reasons
E. Five reasons
Answer : B. Two reasons

4. Why are mobile phones very convenient for bussines people?
A. They can contact clients
B. They can do some important works
C. They can receive some important information
D. They can send some data and surf Internet
E. They can run bussines by staying in and out office
Answer : E. They can run bussines by staying in and out office

5. What is the main idea of the second parragraph?
A. The advantages cellular phones during the emergencies
B. The solution to do when your car breaks down
C. The danger to leave a mobile phone in the car
D. The differences of a mobile phone and a pay phone
E. The necessary equipments among neighbours
Answer : A. The advantages cellular phones during the emergencies

The Vampire and The Princess

Once upon a time, in a huge castle, lived a beautiful princess named Carmilla. She was the only child in the family yet she had been forced to obey her father’s rules. She was unhappy most of the time. The king had never let Carmilla leave the castle. Thus, the maid often caught Carmilla crying in the middle of the night.

One night, Carmilla was sitting in front of her window. Her pretty eyes became blurry with tears. Sally, her maid, couldn’t stand to watch the sadness. She eventually offered Carmilla to watch an opera at Classical Theater. Without hesitation, Carmilla said yes. They sneaked out from the castle at night. The guards had been told to stay quiet while waiting for Sally and Carmilla to come home.

There, Carmilla saw a mysterious handsome tall man playing violin very beautifully. She began to cry, feeling the music had shaken her every soul. Before the curtain was closed, Carmilla caught the man’s eyes. Cold and dark. She knew from that moment that she was in love.

Night after night, Camilla and Cecilion were getting closer. Everytime Cecilion finished his performance, they met behind the stage. Unfortunately, Sally was fired because one of the guards revealed the secret to the king. From then, Carmilla stopped seeing Cecilion and the king ordered her to marry a prince.

“This world is not fair!” shouted Carmilla. Every night she sat by the window, thinking about Cecilion. But, she had to face her wedding and was forced to forget Cecilion. On the night of her wedding day, she was dressed in all-white, crying silently. Suddenly, she received a letter that surprisingly fell from nowhere. She read it carefully and began to cry louder than before.

The letter told her that Cecilion was a vampire. He loved Carmilla more than anything in his life. He asked for Carmilla’s forgiveness because he had been lying to her about his true identity. He also said that vampires and humans couldn’t possibly be together.

“What on earth should I do? I love him!” asked Carmilla. She would rather die than not having a chance to live with Cecilion. Hence, she decided to end her life by slitting her wrist.

The marriage was a tragedy. A stone-cold Carmilla had already died, lying in her coffin. Cecilion knew that he had to take his only love, Carmilla. After everyone left the church, he flew away with Carmilla’s body and sucked her blood. That way made Carmilla become alive and immortal. Her eyes were red as roses, hair as white as clouds. She reborned. As a vampire.

Since Carmilla’s death, nobody in the castle nor around the village had ever seen her and Cecilion. They both seemed to have disappeared. Although everyone thought exactly they were dead, Carmilla and Cecilion actually lived together. Each night, they were hugging each other by the window. Under the moonlight, they were driven with passionate love. Without rules, without sadness. Forever.

The Example of Biography

Harry Styles

Harry Edward Styles was born in Redditch, Worcestershire on 1 February 1994. He is the son of Anne Cox (nรฉe Selley) and Desmond “Des” Styles, who worked in finance. Many of his ancestors were farm laborers in Norfolk. Styles was raised in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire after his parents moved there along with his older sister, Gemma, when he was a child. He attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School. Styles’ parents divorced when he was seven and his mother later was remarried to Robin Twist; he died in 2017. He has an older stepbrother named Mike and a stepsister named Amy, children of Twist. As a sixteen-year-old, he worked part-time at the W. Mandeville Bakery in Holmes Chapel.

As a child, Styles loved singing, covering songs from Elvis Presley. While at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive, Styles was the lead singer for the band White Eskimo, which won a local Battle of the Bands competition. Styles has cited country singer Shania Twain as his “main influence” both musically and in fashion. He has also cited Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Harry Nilsson, Freddie Mercury, and Elvis Presley as being influences. His music contains elements of soft rock, pop, folk, rock, and Britpop.

Following a suggestion from his mother, on 11 April 2010, Styles auditioned as a solo candidate for the seventh series of the British televised singing competition The X Factor, singing a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”. He failed to progress to the “Boys” category at “judges’ houses”. Four others in his age group also failed, but at the suggestion by Nicole Scherzinger, a guest judge, they were put together as an ensemble at Wembley Arena in July 2010, during the “boot camp” stage of the competition, thus qualifying for the “Groups” category. The group consisting of Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, got together for two weeks to get to know one another and practice. In 2017, Styles said he had suggested the name One Direction to his bandmates and they agreed to keep it.

For their qualifying song at “judges’ houses”, and their first song as a group, One Direction sang an acoustic version of “Torn”. Simon Cowell later commented that the performance convinced him that the group “were confident, fun, like a gang of friends, and kind of fearless as well.” Within the first four weeks of the live shows, they were Cowell’s last act in the competition. The group quickly gained popularity in the UK.

In 2016 to present, he has been busy with the solo album and acting debut. In February 2016, Styles left the group’s management company Modest Management and joined Jeffrey Azoff’s Full Stop Management. Styles launched his own record label, Erskine Records, in May and he signed a recording contract with Columbia Records as a solo artist, the same label behind One Direction, in June. Styles wrote the song “Someday” in collaboration with Meghan Trainor for Michael Bublรฉ’s album Nobody but Me, released in October.

In March 2017, Styles announced his first solo single titled “Sign of the Times” and the song was released on 7 April, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart. An accompanying music video for the song directed by Woodkid was also released, featuring Styles levitating and walking on water. The song was variously described by critics as pop rock and soft rock ballad with glam rock influences.

His self-titled debut album was released on 12 May 2017, whereupon it debuted at number one in several countries, including the UK, the US, and Australia. The record was heavily influenced by ’70s soft rock and was described by Variety as a “classic cocktail of psychedelia, Britpop, and balladry”. It received generally favorable reviews from critics and was included in several publications’ lists of the best albums of 2017.

Styles made his film debut in Christopher Nolan’s war film Dunkirk in July 2017, playing a British soldier named Alex who is a part of the Dunkirk evacuation in World War II. He appeared alongside actors Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, and Kenneth Branagh in the film.

Biography Part II
Part 2: Write an inventor biography and record the video while you read the text.

Thomas Edison

Despite his extremely successful life as an inventor and businessman, Thomas Edison did not do very well at school. His school career was so unsuccessful that he ended up being homeschooled by his mother. However, Edison did always have an entrepreneurial spirit. As a youth, Edison would sell vegetables, candy, and newspapers on trains to earn money. Edison was also a keen inventor as a child, setting up his first lab in his parent's basement at the age of 10.

Edison’s interest in communications, which would later inform some of his inventions, came about in a strange way. It all started when, one day, Edison saved a child from a runaway train. This child’s father happened to be a telegraph operator and, in return for saving his child’s life, trained Edison to be a telegraph operator as well.

Thomas Edison is widely regarded as one of the greatest American inventors of all time. Throughout his life, Edison gained over 1000 patents for his inventions, the most famous of which is arguably the lightbulb. Edison was able to invent at such a rapid speed because of his large invention laboratory. This laboratory was home to a team of people that Edison had working for him. This team worked together with Edison to help develop and test his inventions.

In addition to being an inventor, Edison was also a keen businessman. For this reason, he used many of his inventions to form companies. Edison was an owner of countless companies in fields like: Automobiles, Batteries, Cement and cement products Electric light, both domestic and foreign, Mining, Office machinery and supplies, Phonographs, both domestic and foreign, Telegraphs and telephones, both domestic and foreign, and Motion pictures.

Name: Valerie Christabel Hariko
Class: XII IPS 1 (34)

Hi guys! Welcome back to my blog๐Ÿ˜‰. Today, our topic is descriptive text. Don't worry guys, this topic is genuinely easy. So lets study with me๐Ÿ˜Š

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT, or in terms of writing only known as “description” is one of English lessons that should be mastered not only by junior high school students but also senior high school students, college students and anyone who loves English. Because after all, descriptive material is very necessary for the increasing of our English proficiency.

Some of the most famous authors, especially fiction writers, have good skill in writing descriptive text, so that their writing is very readable and easy to understand. Therefore, if we were able to master this lesson well, we might be able to become a great writer in the future.

Furthermore, I hope this explanation and example of the descriptive text can help my friend who is still in a long journey to learn English. Do not hesitate to read the explanation of descriptive text below, the more often we read about this text we will be able to understand it more. Furthermore it would be nice if we do not only understand mere, but also we can also write descriptive text ourselves.

Definition of Descriptive Text
Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

In a broad sense, description, as explained by Kane (2000: 352), is defined like in the following sentence:
Description is about sensory experience—how something looks, sounds, tastes. Mostly it is about visual experience, but description also deals with other kinds of perception.

Thus, if we conclude it from Kane’s explanation above, the descriptive text is meaningful text that describes the experience related to the senses, such as what shape, sound, taste is. Most descriptive text is about visual experience, but in fact the experience other than the sense of sight, we can also use it to make descriptive text.

But in particular, the descriptive text is, “…… is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.”

So, it can be said that the descriptive text is a text that explains about whether a person or an object is like, whether its form, its properties, its amount and others. The purpose of the descriptive text is clear, that is to describe, represent or reveal a person or an object, either abstract or concrete.

Generic Structure of Descriptive Text
When writing descriptive text, there are some generic structures (actually not mandatory) for our writing to be true. The arrangement is:

# Identification: (contains about the introduction of a person, place, animal or object will be described.)
# Description: contains a description of something such as animal, things, place or person by describing its features, forms, colors, or anything related to what the writer describe.

Purpose of Descriptive Text
– To describe person, thing or place in specific
– To describe a particular person, thing or place.

Language Feature of Descriptive Text
– Specific participant : has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). for example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim
– The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in jepara, etc.
– The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because it tells the fact of the object described.
– Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut etc….
